In the area of 800 square meters that rented from a villagers, The headstarting facility for Painted Terrapin has been established and need to be improved countinuously. The facility is functioned as ex-situ conservation place to support in-situ conservation of Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis) in District of Aceh Tamiang.

This facility have been started to operate since 2012. The establisment of this small and basic facility was supported by small grant from Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA). In the long term, the facility will be improved and expected can be a leading facility for freshwater turtle conservation and education. Not only for Painted Terrapin, but for another critically endangered species in Sumatra and Indonesia. About one thousand of students and local people have visited the facility to learn about turtle and our conservation initiative.

This facility is expected able to accommodate endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles, therefore the location was situated on the center, not far from estuaries – habitat of Painted Terrapin –  and hills – habitat of such as endangered Spiny Turtle (Heosemys spinosa), Asian Forest Tortoise (Manouria emys emys). Even, nearby the location is habitat  of Asian Box Turtle (Cuora amboinensis), Asian Leaf Turtle (Cyclemys dentata). Another freshwater turtles and tortoises found in the district are Siebenrockiela crassicolis, Cyclemys oldhami.

Currently, the facility is specialized for Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis). Our basic and facility has three ponds, they are one pond for hatchery, one pond for hatchling and one for juvenile. The hatchery pond is 12 meters square; the hatchling pond is 16 meters and the juvenile pond is 28 meters. The depth of hatchery pond is 1.2 meter, pond for hatchlings is 1 meter and 1.5 meter for adult.

The hatchery pond is expected able to accommodate until 200 eggs. The pond for hacthling is expected able to accommodate about 200 until 400 hatchlings. For the juvenile pond is expected able to accommodate about 50 individuals. Therefore, we plan to expand the facility. The expansion of the pond for juvenile and adult is an urgent to support the long term in-situ conservation effort. The pond (ex-situ) is functioned to keep the individual before released to the habitat (in-situ). By the assumption that the individual must have big and strong enough to survive, this is why we must build more pond for juvenile.
